The Semana del Agua takes place in Istán until Sunday to mark World Water Day. It is a celebration of water with all events and activities based around the abundant water supply to the town. It started on Wednesday and continues until Sunday 26 March.
Today, Friday, there is a guided tour of the fountains in the town to learn some of the history of each one. There is also a tour of the dam and the La Concepción reservoir and a workshop demonstrating the old way of washing clothes and making soap at the El Chorro fountain.
The following day a guide will take visitors to the source of the river Molinos and the 'Árbol de abrazos' (tree of embraces) at 'El Coto' recreation area.
The water museum will have an exhibition and presentation of the 'botijo' on Saturday, an ancient water jug from which water is poured into the throat from a spout held at a distance. There will also be a competition for drinking water from a botijo in which all visitors can take part.
On Sunday another tour of the town's historic fountains is planned as well as a guided walk in El Coto along the ancient irrigation channels built by the Moors hundreds of years ago.
