The Slovenian cycle racer Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) claimed his third consecutive La Vuelta title on Sunday, after winning the 21st and last stage, a time trial in Santiago de Compostela.

The Slovenian finished the tour four minutes and 42 seconds ahead of Spain’s Enric Mas (Movistar), while the Australian Jack Haig (Bahrain) occupied the third step of the podium, seven minutes and 40 seconds behind the champion.

Roglic, who had taken the race lead on Wednesday by winning the mountain stage that ended in the Lakes of Covadonga, becomes the third man to win three titles in a row in the La Vuelta, after the Swiss rider Tony Rominger (1992, 1993 and 1994) and the Spanish cyclist Roberto Heras (2003, 2004 and 2005).

Roglic is now just one title behind the man with the most tour wins in the La Vuelta, Roberto Heras, whose last success in 2005 was tainted by a positive EPO check that year, which was subsequently invalidated by a series of irregularities.
