In a spectacular ceremony that lacked only one thing - a crowd - Spanish athletes have taken part in the parade that marked the official opening of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

As tradition dictates, the parade was led by Greece, the country where the Games were born, but without any applause from the stands and only the encouragement of the volunteers in the centre of the stadium.

The Spanish delegation - dressed in red, white and navy - arrived in the Olympic Stadium in 88th position and was led by Mireia Belmonte and Saúl Craviotto.

Spanish pop star Alejandro Sanz was one of the soloists on the song that announced the arrival of the Olympic torch. A version of John Lennon's 'Imagine' preceded the lighting of the flame that now burns brightly in Tokyo.

Now let the Games begin.
