Two Malaga women will soon be on their way to the Tokyo Olympic Games after being selected for the Spanish handball team.

Sole López and Marta López were among the 16 names announced this week by coach Carlos Viver to form the 'Guerreras' (Warriors), as the women's national handball side is known.

Also called up to represent Spain is the goalkeeper Merche Castellanos, who is from Castilla-La Mancha but plays with the Costa del Sol Málaga club, alongside Sole López.

For both Sole and Merche this will be their first time at the Olympic Games.

Marta López, however, who moves to play for Rapid of Bucharest next season, joins the select group of Spaniards to have represented their country in three Olympic Games. She won bronze with the Guerreras in London 2012 and reached sixth place in Rio 2016.

All three players formed part of the Spanish side that came away with a silver medal from the Women's Handball World Cup in Japan in 2019.

With this latest call-up, Sole and Marta López complete the group of athletes from Malaga province with a ticket to the Olympics.

The other locals to qualify are Damián Quintero (karate), Alejandro Davidovich (tennis), Paula Ruiz (open-water swimming) and Azahara Muñoz (golf).
