Local favourite Alejandro Davidovich won’t be vying for the AnyTech365 Andalucía Open trophy after his unexpected exit at the Puente Romano Tennis Club in Marbella on Thursday at the hands of Belorussian Ilya Ivashka (6-1, 6-3).
Pablo Carreño Busta remains the favourite to win the ATP 250 event trophy which will be presented by tennis legends Manolo Santana and Björn Borg (whose son Leo, 18, was eliminated in the qualifiers of both the ATP 250 and the Challenger tournaments after being granted wild card entry).
Carreño Busta will face Kwon Soon-woo in his quarter-final on Friday.
Also in the quarters are Spanish trio Albert Ramos, Challenger runner-up Jaume Munar, and 17-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, who saw off veteran compatriot Feliciano López in the final last-16-round match on Thursday.
The Andalucía Open comes after Gianluca Mager (102nd in the ATP ranking) won the fourth edition of the Challenger 80 on Sunday, the first tournament to take place as part of a fortnight of top-level tennis.
The Italian came from behind to beat Spaniard Jaume Munar (99th) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and a half.
Despite the capacity restrictions, there was a good atmosphere in the stands of the Manolo Santana centre court which this week continues to welcome spectators until the AnyTech365 Andalucía Open final this Sunday.
