Malaga snatched a late point on the road in Cartagena on Saturday as they remain with an outside chance of making the play-offs this season.
This came after the hosts took advantage of a serious lapse in concentration by Alexander just 14 minutes in. The Venezuelan right-back not only left his man unmarked behind him at the far post, but pulled out of the interception to allow the pass across the face of goal to be tapped in easily by Berto Cayarga.
Cristian López almost doubled Cartagena's lead with an impressive overhead kick, but his strike bounced back out off the base of the post with Dan Barrio beaten.
Malaga improved in the second half and left-back José Matos had two chances either side of López's disallowed header for offside. The first was a looping cross from 30 yards which deceived the keeper and came back out off the post; the second was a volley from much closer range which Leandro Chichizola did well to block.
However, having stayed in the game, the breakthrough finally came in the 81st minute when Julio's instinctive flick found Jozabed one on one with the keeper. The midfielder kept his composure to take the ball around Chichizola to slot home the equaliser.
Next up for Malaga is a midweek fixture. On Tuesday they welcome Almeria to La Rosaleda (kick off 7.30pm).
