A last-gasp equaliser secured a fortunate 1-1 draw for Malaga Femenino at home to Granadilla B on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue and Whites made a composed start against the side from Tenerife but the breakthrough was not forthcoming and their opponents gradually felt their way into the encounter, taking the lead in the 28th minute when forward Aithiara was found on the edge of the box to strike home and give them the lead.
Their one-goal advantage was maintained until halftime, and Malaga were let off the hook following the restart when Granadilla had a goal ruled out as Ainhoa was judged to be offside.
Malaga’s search for an equaliser was met with frustration, as any promising play was let down by a lack of cutting edge in attacking areas. Nati Gutiérrez’s side continued living dangerously and were again saved by an offside flag which ruled out Cindy’s goal out on the hour mark.
Gutiérrez rang in the changes as Malaga pushed for an unlikely equaliser. Opportunities remained limited, until the Costa side earned a corner deep into stoppage time. With just seconds remaining, the ball was whipped in and found substitute María Farfán. The defender poked home from close range for her first of the season and to earn Malaga a draw.
Given the overall balance of play, the point almost felt like a victory, and sparked scenes of celebration from the Malaga players.
