The reigning Olympic badminton champion, Spain's Carolina Marín, won yet another edition of the Thailand Open on Sunday. Due to the pandemic, the country has hosted three consecutive tournaments without spectators this year.
In Sunday's final the 27-year-old from Huelva defeated the same finalist as last weekend - 26-year-old Taiwanese Tai Tzu Ying. Marín won in two hard-fought sets, 21-19 and 21-17. Last week, the Spaniard's victory in the final had been easier (21-9 and 21-16).
Marín's big mission this year is not only to triumph at the Olympic Games in Tokyo but also at the World Championships, where she has won three golds in the past and which in 2021 is scheduled to take place in Huelva, her hometown.
"I'm very happy. Winning two titles in two weeks is incredible. I told myself and my team that when we finished 2020 I wanted to be a new player, with a new mentality, more focused on my game. I want to keep improving," she said after the match.
