This season's performance of Malaga winger Yanis Rahmani, who grew up in the Basque Country, has attracted the attention of several big clubs including Athletic Bilbao who have a transfer policy that favours players from the region.
Since 1912, Athletic have had an unwritten rule whereby the club will only sign players who were born in the Basque Country or who learned their football skills at a Basque club.
The performances of the winger - on loan from Almeria but with an option to buy - places him as one of the best in the current squad with two goals and four assists in 18 games (16 starts).
The 25-year-old French-Algerian player grew up in the Basque Country where his parents came to work from France and he has previously played for the Bilbao club so he has the perfect credentials for a move north.
The winger has also recently been approached by the Algerian national team - one of most prestigious in Africa – and faces a possible call-up to the squad during the next window of international matches in March.
