It's been a long time coming but now it's official: the Solheim Cup will be held on the Costa del Sol in 2023.

The competition, the most important on the international women's calendar, takes place every two years and in 2023 it will be held from 18 to 24 September on the courses at Finca Cortesín in Casares.

Its managing director, Manuel Cardeña, pointed out that these are 'sustainable courses', thanks to a collaboration with Acosol which means that the facilities are irrigated with 100 per cent recycled water. "We are committed to events of this importance on a global level, as they highlight the work we carry out with regard to caring for the environment, sustainability and the circular economy," he said.

'Women's Ryder Cup'

Puerto Banús in Marbella was the setting chosen for the official presentation on Monday of this prestigious tournament, which pits the best players from Europe against their counterparts from the United States in what is the women's version of the Ryder Cup.

The institutions who collaborated to bring this tournament to Spain for the first time (Marbella, Benahavís and Casares town halls, the Malaga Diputación provincial authority and the Andalusian regional government's Tourism department) were all represented at the event.

The regional minister for Tourism, Juan Marín, said that he believed that the Costa del Sol "will once again be an international benchmark", as well as expressing his pride at bringing the highest level of women's golf to Andalucía.

Diputación president and Turismo Costa del Sol chief Francisco Salado also took part in the presentation and wanted to make it clear that having the Solheim Cup come in 2023 confirms that southern Spain is a world leader in the golf sector. "It will generate synergies, employment and economic growth, not only on the coast or in the province but in all Andalucía," said Salado.

"Golf helps to limit the effects of seasonality and generates employment. We must remember that in 2019 we were chosen as the best golf destination in all of Europe," he added.

For her part, the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, said that "it is an event that will go beyond sport", adding, "we will have the opportunity to showcase what we have to offer, which ranges from our excellent climate, to our hotels, our organisational capacity, our gastronomy, our leisure and also our culture".

The event was also attended by Marta Figueras-Dotti, President of the Ladies European Tour (LET), as well as the President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), Gonzaga Escauriaza. She highlighted the importance of golf as an engine of economic recovery at a delicate time for Spain.

"Great news"

"Hosting the Solheim Cup in our country is great news both for the sport of golf and for Spanish society as a whole. Once again we will have the opportunity to show the world the excellence of our golf facilities and all that goes with them. The announcement comes at a perfect time as it gives us the opportunity to help accelerate the recovery of the tourism sector. Let's work and enjoy this spectacular sporting event right now," said the RFEG chief.
