As the dust settled on a resounding defeat and the closing of the transfer window, Malaga sporting director Manolo Gaspar gave his take on his department's work over the summer during a press conference at La Rosaleda on Wednesday.
"Everything has been complicated by the times we're in, with the coronavirus, the late end to the season... But the measures we've taken were critical for the club and required lots of communication and precise coordination. That's why I'm pleased by how everything turned out," said Gaspar.
"In the circumstances, this is the best squad we could have built. We didn't have the money to make a whole new squad and our image had been damaged a lot. However, now we've got a very versatile squad, with an average age of 26, with a good mix of youth and experience in this league. They all speak the same language and they all understand what it means to play for a club like Malaga," he added.
Despite this, Gaspar made it crystal clear that the club's objective this year is to avoid relegation: "I understand the fans, after seeing us win two games, but this is a new squad with everything that comes with that. We will need time for everything to click."
