  • The local tennis star will play with the veteran for the first time in the hope of adding his second career doubles title

Local tennis player Alejandro Davidovich (70th in the individual ATP rankings) will compete at Roland Garros from Monday in both singles and doubles, pairing with veteran Spaniard Fernando Verdasco (58th).

In the third and final Grand Slam tournament of the season, Davidovich will take on a new partner in the form of the 36-year-old, 15 years his senior, who is eighth in the doubles rankings having won eight doubles titles (Valencia in 2004, Umag in 2008, New Haven in 2009, Barcelona and San José in 2010, Houston in 2014 and Bucharest in 2016).

On paper, this will be a pairing where both will complement each other well (a left-hander and a right-hander) and Davidovich's coach, Jorge Aguirre, believes that by competing in more doubles matches, he will be able to grow in confidence on the big stage, but also improve his service and volley.

Davidovich has previously won a doubles tournament (the ATP 250 in Santiago de Chile in February) alongside Roberto Carballés - in that case also as a part of a pairing that had never previously played together.

The 21-year-old enters this tournament on the back of reaching the tournament proper at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome. He was eliminated in the round of 64 by Dušan Lajović while compatriot Rafael Nadal only made it as far as the quarter-finals where he was beaten by Diego Schwartzman. Garbiñe Muguruza went one step further, losing in the semi-finals to Simona Halep.
