Another race, another landmark for Ouassim Oumaiz. The 21-year-old from Nerja set both a personal best (slashing off 18 seconds) and a new Spanish under-23 record in the 5,000 metres in the Diamond League meeting in Monaco last Friday with a time of 13:13.14.

That time would ordinarily be enough to automatically secure him a place in the upcoming Olympic Games. However, given the disruption inflicted on athletics across the world, only times recorded between 1 December and 31 May will count.

Despite this, and given Oumaiz's rapid progression, all seems to point towards the youngster making the Games in Tokyo next summer, provided he can stay injury free.
