Malaga pulled off something of an upset with a hard-fought 2-1 home victory over Villarreal on Sunday.

Though the game started off finely balanced, the visitors took an early lead through Salma Paralluelo. The 15-year-old, already an international footballer and athlete, was a constant thorn in the hosts side, and Villarreal began to dominate the game after her left-footed effort put them in front.

Though they came under lots of pressure, the Malaga defence coped admirably, and when their lines were breached, Noelia was up to the challenge as well, making several key saves.

After soaking up this pressure, Malaga worked their way back into the encounter. Adriana and Buceta had chances, but it was María Ruiz who got her side back into the game, the winger ending her dry spell in front of goal by finishing a chance that had come from an Adriana free-kick.

Both teams were clearly out to win the game after the break, but it was now Malaga who were on top. Adriana again put in a fine set-piece delivery, with the ball falling to Buceta who was unlucky to hit the bar.

The hosts finally took the lead with eight minutes of regulation time to go, after Edna, who led the line for Malaga, was brought down in the box. Pamela stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake. The win was Malagas third of the season and puts them in seventh place.
