It is being described as the most shameful episode in the history of Malaga CF and the club's fans know who to blame: club president Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani.
Al-Thani has all summer been considered an obstacle in the planning of the playing squad, refusing to sign off on deals and taking control of negotiations personally. All of this caused enormous delays until deadline day arrived and Al-Thani decided to give final say to those working from Malaga. By this point, all parties with whom Malaga wanted to enter negotiations had become acutely aware of the club's struggles and were only prepared to make derisory offers.
Once the window closed, and especially after the departure of Shinji Okazaki was announced just after midnight, the public backlash against Al-Thani went into overdrive, especially on social media.
A number of anti-Al-Thani slogans then appeared on the walls around the outside of La Rosaleda stadium, while the Association of Minority Shareholders called a protest outside the stadium at 5pm on Saturday ahead of the visit of Almeria (kick-off 6pm).
