It appears that the future of Malaga winger Javi Ontiveros has been decided. The 21-year-old has only featured in one pre-season game so far but with the club needing to sell before they can register any new players, Ontiveros is the prime candidate for a departure.
Despite having a 15-million-euro release clause, Malaga accepted an offer from Villarreal of seven million euros (rising to nine if various performance-based targets are met). The offer also included an attractive 20 per cent sell-on clause.
Club president Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani, however, refused to sign off on the deal and made a counteroffer which has been rejected. An offer from another club was mentioned although that appears to have been a smokescreen.
Villarreal are said to be looking at an alternative winger and it is not known whether the offer is still on the table, or whether the same terms are being proposed.
