A group of athletic expats raised more than 5,000 euros during the Trifit Marbella Big Challenge, a grueling 24-hour triathlon organised to help Sarah Almagro Vallejo, the youngster from Marbella who had her hands and feet amputated after contracting sepsis.

Chris Grenfell (53) and Jansen Riley (55), along with several swimmers and cyclists, swam five kilometres along the Marbella coastline, before embarking on a 200-kilometre bicycle ride to Granada. Chris and Jansen then attempted to run up Pico Veleta, the highest tarmac road in Europe. Unfortunately, Chris suffered exhaustion half way up the mountain and was forced to withdraw from the race, but Jansen went on to complete the triathlon in 23 hours and 13 minutes.

"I was absolutely devastated to have to pull out of the final 25 kilometres of the run. I was so close, yet so far, but at least we have raised a good sum for such a worthy cause," Chris told SUR in English.
