  • Despite an initial target of 1,000 euros, Della Adern was presented with more than double that amount to help with home conversions

Hosts Smiles, Viñuela and three teams from Walking Football Spain (Benalmádena, Benahavís and Elviria) all took part in a fundraising tournament at the Retamar sports complex in Benalmádena last week to help local resident Della Adern with home conversions. It is hoped they will make her life easier following her diagnosis with motor neurone disease.

Smiles followed up their victory in the La Cala Cup three weeks previously with a 2-0 victory in the final against Elviria. Some of this success could be attributed to the coaching received from ex-Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and England legend Larry Lloyd.

The Player of the Tournament bottle of champagne went to Julie of Viñuela who was in no way fazed by some of her bigger opponents.

Despite an initial target of 1,000 euros, Gray Salt of Smiles put tremendous efforts into collecting as much in donations as was possible and Della and husband Simon, who were both in attendance, received a total of 2,300 euros at a presentation following the tournament.

Footage of the event can be seen when Channel 5's Bargain-Loving Brits In The Sun is broadcast next January.
