Smiles WFC of Fuengirola, in collaboration with Walking Football Spain, are hosting a charity fundraising walking football match on Wednesday 24 July from 6 to 9pm at the Retamar sports complex in Benalmádena.

This fundraiser is to assist Benalmádena resident Della Arden, 48, who started feeling ill and weak five years ago. However, it was only two years ago that she was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, leaving Della and her family devastated.

The family has been raising money to facilitate refurbishments to assist Della in her movement around the house but there is still much work to be done.

The family were gifted a van by a friend to help Della get around with her daughters, 17 and 14, but this van needs to be fitted with special ramps to accommodate Della's wheelchair on board and this is where the charity tournament is assisting.

Teams including hosts Smiles (Fuengirola), Viñuela (Vélez-Málaga) and WFS teams representing Benalmádena, Elviria and Benahavís will compete for the Della Arden Trophy which will be played annually. The players will donate their match fees to the fund while on the night other fundraisers, such as a raffle, will be taking place.

Spectators are encouraged to come and watch this fast-growing sport. Admission is free but a donation would be appreciated.

The bar will be open for refreshments with the players enjoying a drink afterwards.

TV crews

The football won't be the only attraction next Wednesday. Film crews from Channel 5 will be at the ground filming for their documentary series Bargain-Loving Brits in the Sun. They will be following the life of Gary Salt who runs the Smiles team and interviewing other people involved in the tournament.
