  • The first home game will be against Las Palmas on the second matchday

The new football season moved one step closer on Thursday as the fixture list for the upcoming campaign was announced.

Malaga, who missed out on promotion back to La Liga via the play-offs, will start the new season in Santander, when they take on the newly-promoted Racing, making their return to professional football.

The game, the first test of the new project led by Víctor Sánchez del Amo, is scheduled for Sunday 18 August, but it is highly likely to be moved to the Friday for TV coverage.

The following week is the first home game at La Rosaleda where Las Palmas will be the visitors.

Changes in the competition

This year, like last, the fixtures will be symmetrical with the order of the first half of the campaign repeated in the second half. However, there are a number of changes being implemented for the first time this year.

One is that the season will conclude earlier, finishing in the week of 24 May 2020, avoiding a scenario where the play-offs don't conclude until the end of June.

In order to accommodate this, there will be three mid-week fixtures, one in September, one in October and the last in January.
