There's no rest for the wicked. Just days after losing out in the play-offs thought are already turning to next season and how the squad is going to shape up.
The new season will begin on 18 August and the players return for training in less than 20 days and Malaga have a lot of issues they need to resolve before the start of the new campaign.
The first is the wage cap which will be even stricter now that the club is entering its second season in Segunda. The second is the large number of players on the books. If you include youth players who are regulars in the frist team (Iván, Keidi, Álex Mula and Hicham), Malaga have 30 players contracted for next season, after Cifu renewed his contract on Tuesday.
Nine players will leave after the conclusion of their loans: Pawel Kieszek, Axel Werner, Pau Torres, Alfred N'Diaye, Erik Morán, Iván Alejo, Mamadou Koné, Gustavo Blanco Leschuk and Yevhen Seleznov. Also leaving will be Jack Harper for whom a 1.5-million-euro move to Getafe was agreed in February.
But despite this large number of outgoing players, Malaga will have numerous players under contract, with ten returning from loan moves: Roberto Rosales (from Espanyol), Luis Muñoz (Cordoba), Mikel (first Reus then Gimnàstic), Esteban Rolón (Genoa), Emanuel Cecchini (Banfield), Keko (Valladolid), Jony (Alavés), Adnane Tighadouini (Esbjerg), Michael Santos (Leganés) and Juanpi (Huesca).
Activating Plan B
Until now, the club had been planning with two scenarios in mind: promotion and remaining in Segunda. Now Plan B must be activated and that includes renewing the contract of Cifu. In the event of promotion, it was expected that Rosales would return but given his stellar season at Espanyol, that now seems unlikely.
Another part of this Plan B was the signing of winger Josep Señé from Cultural Leonesa. Given that promotion wasn't achieved, the Catalan is expected to form part of the first team squad next season.
However, the biggest work now is to focus on trimming the fat on a squad that is much too big and which still has the wage structure of a La Liga team.
