Rafael Nadal won his twelfth men's singles title at the French Open in Paris on Sunday. Spain's tennis superstar beat Austrian Dominic Thiem in four sets (6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1) after a match lasting three hours.

Nadal is now the first person in history to win the same Grand Slam tournament 12 times, after winning all but three of his French finals. His success in this year's Roland Garros was the 18th Grand Slam title of his career, only two behind Swiss star Roger Federer.

"At one point we did not know if we could continue competing. Thanks for supporting me in the difficult moments," the star said after recieving his trophy, directing his comments at his team.

It was an intense final between the pair, who also faced each other in last year's French Open final, but Thiem had to settle once again for second place.
