  • Spain take on England and Croatia in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday and Tuesday, respectively

Many eyebrows were raised as new Spain head coach Luis Enrique named his first squad since taking control of the national team in July. No less than ten of the 23 who were selected for the World Cup by Julen Lopetegui have dropped out of the squad that has been selected for UEFA Nations League games against England and Croatia on Saturday and Tuesday, respectively.

Three of those came as a result of international retirement, (Andrés Iniesta, Gerard Piqué and David Silva), with Jordi Alba, Koke, Iago Aspas, Pepe Reina, Álvaro Odriozola, Nacho Monreal and Lucas Vázquez all not chosen.

In their place, Luis Enrique has called up Pau López, Raúl Albiol, Diego Llorente, Iñigo Martínez, Marcos Alonso, José Luis Gayà, Sergi Roberto, Rodri, Dani Ceballos, Suso and Álvaro Morata.

On Monday, however, Iago Aspas returned to the squad to replace Diego Costa who, for family reasons, had to pull out.
