Almost a hundred amateur golfers took to the greens at Cabopino in Marbella on Saturday to participate in the second leg of the Costa del Golf Tour, organised by SUR and its publication Costa del Golf.

José María Gil Osorio and Pablo Ortega Briesenmester topped the leaderboard in the first and second categories, respectively, while María José Vegas Sillero came out on top among the women.

The top six classified players in each of the three tournaments qualify directly for the grand final to be contested at the Real Club de Guadalmina. In the first category (alongside Gil Osorio) Eduardo Delgado Rojas, José Antonio Benítez Domínguez, Francisco Javier López Mesa, Christian Far Boggiano and José Ramón Feito Feito also booked their spots in the final. In the second category, Julián Zurita Gadea, Juan Carlos López Grau, Sergio Orovio Borrego, Jorge Alonso Lopera and Jesús Podadera Guerrero also qualified.

In the women's category, Patricia V. Thiele Rico, Ana Isabel Irmia Diéguez, María del Carmen Noguero Aguililla, Mercedes Espiñeira Bañuelos and Carolina Pérez-Estrada Cornejo will be joining those already qualified for the final from the first leg already contested at Alcaidesa.

The day, sponsored by the Da Bruno restaurant group, "was accompanied by a light breeze throughout the morning and afternoon", said the tour's sporting director, Francisco Gómez.

The fine state of the facilities at Cabopino were applauded by participants who are now looking forward to the next stage of the tournament which takes place this Saturday, 7 July, at El Paraíso. Those who wish to participate can still sign up through Oferplan.

A consolidated tournament

The tour, now in its fifth year, has brought together, across its past editions, almost a thousand amateur players in its men's and women's categories. Following each game day, a prizegiving ceremony and raffle takes place - a factor which has helped the Costa del Golf Tour to become a well established tournament on the amateur circuit.

On Saturday, SUR's commercial director, Jorge Artero; its director of new business, Federico Moret; commercial delegate in Marbella, Leandro Rodríguez; external relations head, Pilar Perea; and marketing chief, Pilar Alcalá, were all in attendance for the prizegiving.

Also present were Da Bruno group owner, Bruno Filippone, and head of marketing and quality at the Marcos 1942 jewellers, Esther Ruiz. Both businesses sponsor the tour, as do Acosol and the Junta de Andalucía. Other collaborators include the four host courses, Andalucía Golf Select, Copyrap, Golfriends and FC&CO.
