Just in front of the sports centre which bears the name of the new Spain coach Fernando Hierro, there was a party atmosphere as family members, friends and former colleagues gathered at the Hierro family bar, run by his brother Pepe, for the Fernando's first game as Spain coach.

"What a job he's been given!" says Pepe. "It's a mess but also really great. The most difficult part will be clearing the players' heads after all that's happened."

After Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal an early lead, Pepe confidently said, "There's plenty of time left." And so it proved.

When Nacho made it 3-2, jubilation spread around the bar , but also relief that Fernando wouldn't be failing his first test as coach.

Though Ronaldo's late equaliser was a setback, Pepe is looking forward to the games to come: "We'll make the quarters at least.

"I told him that he would have luck because he was appointed on the day of San Antonio, the day of our father, Antonio Ruiz."
