Spain's top two tennis players enjoyed mixed fortunes in their French Open quarterfinal ties at Roland Garros on Thursday afternoon, with number one Rafael Nadal progressing to the semis with an easy win over Diego Schwartzman, but his counterpart Garbiñe Muguruza suffering elimination at the hands of number one Simona Halep.

Reigning champion Nadal's clash against the Argentinian, seeded 11th, began on Wednesday afternoon, but was suspended due to rain with the score at 4-6, 5-3. When play resumed on Thursday, Nadal was by far the better player, winning his service game and then both the third and fourth sets 6-2.

On Wednesday Muguruza confidently saw off former world number 1 Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-1 in another strong display but by Thursday, tiredness came into play as she lost to the Romanian Halep, 6-1 6-4.

Nadal, who remains on course to defend his title, will face another Argentinian, Juan del Potro, for a spot in the final against either Austrian Dominic Thiem or Italian Marco Cecchinato.
