The European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES Europe) has confirmed that Antequera will be designated a European City of Sport for 2018. It follows the positive evaluation made of the town's bid during an inspection earlier this year. During its visit, the ACES reviewed the activities Antequera organises and its investment in sport.

The Federation said that the town is a good example of sport for all, as a support for health, integration, education and respect.

The mayor of Antequera, Manuel Barón, thanked the effort of all the people of Antequera , as with everybody's help, with that sporting spirit we have and with the magnificent organisation of the municipal sports department, we have been able to secure this recognition, thanks to which Antequera has once again achieved worldwide recognition.

The official award of the City of Sport 2018 designation will be made on 6 December in the European Parliament in Brussels at an ACES Europe awards ceremony.

Several European cities this year are awarded the designation. Past Costa towns and cities have included Marbella and Alhaurín de la Torre. In 2020 Malaga will be European Capital of Sport, a higher designation.
