Marbella got off to a great start to the season as they overcame Mérida on Saturday to win 2-0. New arrivals Chus Hevia and Corpas, who joined the club from relegated Linares, were able to win over around 800 local fans with a fine display.
Mérida, who are now managed former Marbella head coach Medhi Nafti, started the game well. Despite being away from home, the visitors looked composed in possession and played with confidence and skill. Marbella had little room to create anything going forward, and Mérida’s defence was organised and resilient.
However, as the game progressed, the home side began to improve. Thanks to strong midfield performances from Rioja and Añón, Marbella began to turn the game on its head.
Just before the end of the first half Corpas broke through and delivered a fine ball into the box which was headed in by Chus Hevia, a great move from the two ex-Linares players. A draw would have been a fair scoreline at the break, but the home team went into the changing room one up.
The game changed completely in the second half as the hosts began to take control. More and more space was opening up around the pitch as Marbella began to break down the deteriorating Mérida contingent. The visitors made a double change as they attempted to claw back, but it was to no avail.
Five minutes from the final whistle Rioja found space down the left flank and put in a low cross for Corpas who turned it into the back of the net. It was a dream debut for the two new faces, and a great start to the new season for Marbella.
New Marbella manager Fernando Estévez gave praise to his players after the game: “If it had ended 4 or 5-0 it would not have been a surprise, we had eight clear chances and in the end we deserved the victory.”
Marbella play away to Córdoba B on 27 August in their second game in Segunda B.
