Centre-back Jorge Meré, who impressed while on under-21 duty this summer, is set to join Malaga on a season-long loan deal from Sporting Gijón.
An agreement had been reached weeks ago but Malaga were anxious, given his successful summer, that another team would swoop in and activate his 15-million-euro release clause while he was on his extended break. However, this interest didn't materialise as the player preferred to remain in Spain - the south coast his preferred destination.
The Costa club have taken advantage of a release clause in the 22-year-old's contract which granted him a loan move to a LaLiga side in the event of Sportings relegation.
Meré is expected to be officially unveiled as a Malaga player on Tuesday, already having arrived in the city to undergo a medical. This came after he said good bye to his parent club at a press conference on Sunday. "I'm leaving home," he said. "Thanks to all the fans who have shared their love with me. I owe it all to them."
Meré is expected to join up with his new teammates in time for the start of the club's training camp in the Netherlands on 19 July.
