Weligton's time at the club is over. The Brazilian veteran said his goodbyes at an emotional press conference at La Rosaleda on Wednesday afternoon, after ten years of loyal service to Malaga CF.
"It has been ten years of immense happiness," he said through tears as he announced his retirement. The 37-year-old spoke of the obstacles he has had to overcome, especially in recent times with his fitness issues, but also expressed immense pride for what he had achieved during his career.
He said: "I never imagined I would be able to become a professional footballer nor come as far as I have. I never played for my national team but I've played against some fantastic players and have been able to share a dressing room with some fantastic pros, like Martín Demichelis. I am really thankful to all of the clubs I've represented."
In the presence of his family, teammates and directors, he concluded: "I have grown a lot during my time here, and so has the club. I hope you all will continue taking the club forward. Our paths with cross again. I will come back... Malaga is my home."
