The Fuengirola Lions have just completed an unprecedented campaign, becoming the first side to win the Liga Sur, the Liga Andaluza and the junior championships in three categories, all in the same season.

The momentous achievement was rounded off this weekend as the senior side headed to Cartagena for the Liga Sur playoffs.

The Fuengirola team started very strong by beating the Sevilla Dragons 12-2 and then the local team Tiburones de Cartagena 9-2 on Saturday. By doing so, the Lions earned a place in the quarterfinals on Sunday against Diablos de Mislata, which turned out to be very intense and tight game.

Mislata won it by a narrow 5-4 margin and went directly to the final. Owing to the competitions unusual format, the Lions got another chance to reach the final, facing Sancti Petri in the semis, a game they won 5-3, setting up a clash with Mislata once again.

In the final, Mislata were able to take a 1-0 lead into the second half after a goal in the closing stages of the first. However, two faults by the Diablos gave power play to the Lions who were able to score two goals within a minute, enough to settle the tie and seal their dominance of southern Spain.

Next season will start on home territory with Fuengirola hosting an international inline hockey tournament from 16 to 17 September with teams from all around Europe coming to compete on what organisers hope will be a new rink, which will considerably increase safety for players and spectators alike.
