It appears the weight of a must-win game was too much for Marbella to bear as Extremadura, fighting relegation, easily inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the visitors in Almendralejo on Sunday.

The first half began with the home side dominating possession and creating a number of good chances. In fact they won a penalty as early as the seventh minute when Tiri deliberately handled the ball in the area. Fortunately for the away side, keeper Manu dived the right way to deny Willy from the spot.

The scores did not remain level for long, however. After approximately 10 minutes, in which Marbella had hardly stepped foot in the oppositions half, Willy put Extramadura ahead with his third shot on goal. A cross from Carlos Rubén on the right wing found the strikers head at the back post and there was little Manu could do to keep the ball out of his net.

The play continued in a similar way for much of the first half with Marbellas Zé Turbo alone in creating any kind of work for the Extremadura defence.

After the break, Marbella looked a little more threatening as Kike Márquez helped to fire the side up. Extremadura keeper, Doblas, was finally forced into action by Turbo a few minutes into the second half shortly before the forward created the visitors best chance of the game, thwarted by the crossbar.

With the clock ticking down, Marbellas main threat in the closing stages came down the left wing. There were calls for a Marbella penalty after a clumsy tackle from José Rodríguez, as the visitors continued to push for an equaliser.

However, the equaliser never came. Instead Willy and Pierre continued to challenge Manu on the counter-attack, the keeper maintaining his resolve until the 93rd minute, when he left an open goal for Extremaduras Miguel Rubiá to seal the hosts victory.

The defeat keeps Marbella in seventh place and prompted Miguel Álvarez to offer his resignation.
