Unicaja lacked fluency but made their quality show as they defeated relegation-threatened Obradoiro 78-70 in Santiago de Compostela on Saturday evening.

Barely 72 hours after defeating Valencia to take the EuroCup title, Unicaja relied on their accuracy from long-range efforts to secure victory.

As was expected, Joan Plaza's side seemed to lack freshness at the beginning of the game, which consequently saw Obradoiro take a 6-0 lead thanks to two three-point baskets from Deividas Dulkys. The visitors fought their way back into the game through American duo Jeff Brooks and Jamar Smith, who scored and gave three assists each, peppering the Obradoiro basket with three-point efforts that eventually put Unicaja into an eight-point lead.

That lead was cut in half at the end of the first quarter, and in the second quarter the Malaga side's 24-20 lead was overturned as Obradoiro began to dominate, with the Unicaja defence granting the likes of Txemi Urtasun and José Pozas far too much room to manoeuvre in.

Despite their sloppiness in possession and losing out on several offensive rebounds, Unicaja managed to draw level at 37-all going into half time, largely thanks to Carlos Suárez's three-point baskets.

The third quarter saw the affair become quite tight, as the baskets scored by Obradoiro's Shayne Whittington, Artem Pustovyi and Mickey McConnell were neutralised by points scored by Dani Díez and Smith, with the score 58-57 to Unicaja going into the final quarter.

Unicaja pushed at the beginning of the final quarter and regained their eight-point lead as a result of scoring seven points without reply. Obradorio once again managed to reduce the deficit, but three-pointers from Smith and former Obradoiro idol Adam Waczyski decide the game in favour of Joan Plaza's side.

Unicaja's next game sees them play host to MoraBanc Andorra at 12.30pm on Sunday.
