Following the mid-week capitulation against Valencia in the EuroCup, Unicaja put in a much-improved performance against Montakit Fuenlabrada on Sunday in a match that served as a confidence boost not just for the players, but also for the fans.

While Joan Plazas teams level may not be up to the standard of the leagues big boys, this win showed that the gap may not be so large.

Unicaja started with a noticeable increase in energy, but it wasnt until the introduction of Díaz and Nedovic that the game settled completely in their favour, ending the first quarter on 26-20. The base from Malaga controlled the game from defence, while new singing Omic added extra steel to the side. In fact, the second quarter was probably the best weve seen from Unicaja all season. Fuenlabrada couldnt handle Nedovic who scored 13 points in eight minutes, taking the hosts lead to 42-20 after 15 minutes.

At this stage, though, Plaza decided to give a breather to the Serbian, Díaz and Omic, allowing the visitors to narrow the deficit at half time (53-35).

Those inside the Carpena were expecting an onslaught from Fuenlabrada after the break but, in truth, it never materialised. They improved their play, but only managed two baskets in the first seven minutes. This left the score at 66-39 and the game all but over.

The advantage allowed Unicaja to relax, entering the final quarter with the scores at 72-47. Plaza took advantage of the margin to give minutes to Lafayette whose confidence has been shattered recently, but also reintroduced Díaz and Nedovic to ensure there wasnt a sting in the tail.
