Rafael Nadal's dream of a first major title since 2014 were crushed by Roger Federer on Sunday, who defeated the Spaniard in the final of the Australian Open.

Doubts over Nadal's fitness had arisen before the tournament given his persistent wrist problems which saw him withdraw from Wimbledon and the French Open last year.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard managed to avoid injury this tournament and took his Swiss counterpart to five sets, but it was the latter who emerged victorious, claiming his fifth Australian Open title and his 18th overall with a 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 win.

This was the 30-year-old's first defeat to Federer in a major final since their clash at Wimbledon in 2007.
