  • Other coronavirus control measures will be eased from Thursday, and recommendations for religious processions were also announced by the regional government after a meeting of the Junta's committee of experts

The Junta de Andalucía has given the go-ahead for cinemas, theatres and auditoriums to increase their capacity to 100 per cent in areas that are at health alert Level 1, although maintaining the greatest possible "interpersonal distance and health and safety conditions".

The whole of Malaga province is at Covid-19 alert Level 1 except for the (western) Costa del Sol health district, which is at Level 2 (but likely to go to Level 1 from Thursday).

The number of people allowed at tables inside nightlife establishments will be the same at both Level 2 and Level 1, going from six to eight diners.

These were among the measures agreed on Tuesday (14 September) by the Andalusian High Impact Public Health Alerts advisory council, better known as the Junta’s committee of experts; the changes will come into force this Thursday.

Likewise, in children's recreational establishments in Level 1 areas, two groups of users are allowed to play simultaneously, as long as they do not mix in the same area of the premises. The capacity limit is also increased to 100 per cent in outdoor spaces and 75 per cent in closed spaces at health alert Level 1.

Additionally, the beaches of the towns at Level 2 will no longer have to close at night.

Religious processions

For outdoor worship (processions on public roads) the committee of experts has made a series of recommendations; the people who carry the images should be fully vaccinated or have a certificate of recovery from the disease, for example. In addition, the participants in the processions must wear face masks. Another recommendation is that the number of people who carry the religious carvings be kept to a minimum, without compromising safety, and the greatest possible social distancing should be maintained.

In churches of the municipalities at Level 1, one hundred per cent of their capacity is authorised.

Sport

In sports facilities, at health alert Level 1, one hundred per cent capacity is allowed for physical-sports practice in conventional open-air spaces and facilities. It is maintained at 75 per cent for indoors.

Public and private universities in Andalucía will be able to continue developing their face-to-face teaching, and must adopt the preventive measures stipulated by the health authority. The measures for the 2021/22 academic year have been updated - inline with the update approved by the National Public Health Commission - with the aim of authorising the maximum attendance of students (as long as the coronavirus situation allows it).

The committee of experts agreed the measures on a day when the Andalusian Ministry of Health reported 577 infections, 21 deaths and 3,301 people who have recovered from the disease. The cumulative incidence rate for the region stands at 98.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Such a low rate of infection has not been seen in the region for some 13 months.
