A serving member of Spain’s Legion has been arrested after a five-year-old girl died after being hit by a vehicle in Roquetas de Mar in Andalucía’s Almería province.

The military man produced a positive result in a breathalyser test carried out by Local Police after the accident.

Sources from the Legion’s Álvarez de Sotomayor base in Viator have confirmed that the arrested man, who was driving a car, belongs to the unit, and they have expressed the “deepest sorrow” of the military unit to the family of the child.

The incident happened at a pedestrian crossing next to a supermarket located in El Parador on Tuesday evening (6 July).

Emergency services who attended the accident could do nothing to save the little girl's life and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Roquetas de Mar town council’s social services department offered psychological care to the girl's family and called for a minute of silence in her memory at the doors of the town hall this Wednesday.
