The former treasurer of the Partido Popular (PP) party has accused former PM Mariano Rajoy of knowing about the illegal funding of the party, which he says operated from 1982.

"Rajoy personally destroyed the [duplicate accounts] but didn't know I kept a copy," Luis Bárcenas has now told investigators, a few days before the trial starts over the case.

The PP has said Bárcenas still needs to prove the accusation.

"That PP no longer exists," said the party's current leader, Pablo Casado.
