Madrid paralysed: heavy snow forces cancellation of capital's trains and planes

  • The train operator Renfe has suspended all services between Malaga and Madrid this Saturday due to heavy snowfall

Renfe has announced the suspension throughout this Saturday, of rail services to and from Madrid due to heavy snowfall and excessive accumulation of snow along the line caused by the storm 'Filomena'.

The decision, taken due to the accumulation of snow along the line caused by the storm 'Filomena', affects the high-speed service, long and medium distance trains, as well as the Cercanías service of the capital.

Similarly, the suspension of the high-speed trains between Andalucía and Catalonia has been announced.

The Renfe spokesman told Europa Press that a review of the cancellation of services suspension will be updated in the coming hours.

The Madrid Barajas airport has decided to stop all its operations throughout Saturday due to the ice and snow that has accumulated on the runways, low visibility and the weather forecast for the next few hours, according to airport operator Aena.

The situation is not much better on the roads where teams from the Military Emergency Unit were deployed on Friday evening to free motorists who were trapped in their vehicles in the Madrid region.

The 112 emergency services in Madrid warn, “Progress is being made but there is still a lot of work ahead.”
