  • Only 489 people attended out of the thousand summoned to the rapid testing session in the Campo de Gibraltar town

A voluntary mass coronavirus screening in La Línea de la Concepción has concluded with the completion of 489 tests, which represents less than half of the 1,000 people who were summoned.

The tests, in which only 15 people produced positive results, were done on a random, representative sample of the population.

The screening was carried out by a Junta de Andalucía mobile unit which also travelled to Algeciras, where another 1,000 people were also called to participate.

The testing was called for after the regional government ordered the perimeter closure of eight towns due to the proliferation of infections linked to the new strain of coronavirus first detected in the UK

The municipal mobility blockade affects the towns of La Línea de la Concepción, Algeciras, Los Barrios, Castellar de la Frontera, Jimena de la Frontera, San Martín del Tesorillo, San Roque and Tarifa.

All these municipalities are part of the Campo de Gibraltar area and higher incidence rates per 100,000 inhabitants have been registered in the last 14 days, standing at 316 cases compared to the 140 average across Andalucía.

The situation has caused high level of pressure on the hospitals in the region, especially in the intensive care units, due to the proliferation of cases linked to the new variant of Covid-19 that has now been detected in Gibraltar too.
