  • It is hoped that new measures that have been taken, especially in the Madrid and Aragón regions, as well as localised lockdowns across the country, are starting to have an effect

After Spain became the first country in Europe to surpass half a million coronavirus infections on Monday, by Thursday the cumulative total of Covid-19 cases reached 543,379, with a further 8,866 cases reported. However, the day-on-day increase is showing signs of slowing.

While large cities and their metropolitan areas continue to produce the highest number of new infections, it is hoped that new measures that have been taken, especially in the Madrid and Aragón regions, as well as localised lockdowns across the country, are having an effect.

That said, the rate of infection per 100,000 inhabitants in Spain in the last fourteen days remained by far the highest in Europe on Thursday at 263.2, almost double the number of France (135.1) which comes in second place. In Italy, this number is currently 32; 39.6 in the United Kingdom; and 21 in Germany.

Although the vast majority of these cases have few or very minor complications, data from the Ministry of Health shows that hospitalisations nationwide had increased by more than a thousand since last Friday to 8,398.
