Anne Carson, the radical Canadian essayist and poet, is to be awarded the distinguished annual Princesa de Asturias award, in the category for Literature. The awards are normally given out at a ceremony in October in the presence of the Royal Family.

Carson is known for merging genres and building bridges between classicism and modernism. The judges said, "Anne Carson has attained levels of intensity and intellectual standing that place her among the most outstanding of present-day writers."
