Experts were starting to get worried on Thursday that Spain could be starting a fresh spike in Covid-19 infections. For the last few days the number of new cases identified and deaths had been steadily increasing. This raised fears that the more relaxed lockdown measures in around half the country may be having a negative effect.
The number of new recorded cases nationally on Thursday in the previous 24 hours was 506, up from 439 on Wednesday and 426 on Tuesday.
Three regions (Madrid, Catalonia and Castilla y León) made up 70 per cent of Thursday’s total.
The number of recorded deaths in the same period was 217, compared to 184 on Wednesday and 176 on Tuesday.
In Malaga province on Thursday, the number of people cured in the day exceeded new cases once again. One person locally had died in Thursday’s data, bringing the total from the start of the coronavirus outbreak in the Malaga area to 273.
In terms of patients still in hospital in Malaga province, including the Costa del Sol, there were 64 on Thursday of whom 13 were in intensive care.
