Police have detained a man over a string of cold-blooded killings of people sleeping rough in the streets of Barcelona.

Four homeless men have been violently murdered during lockdown in the nighttime attacks in their makeshift homes in doorways. The attacks all took place in the central Eixample district. The suspect held is reportedly a 25-year-old Brazilian who lives in a caravan on the outskirts of the city.

Local residents had become increasingly worried about the welfare of the homeless after the seemingly indiscriminate murders in the middle of lockdown restrictions.

Police say that the crimes have certain similarities and CCTV cameras recorded evidence. The first murder was on 19 March in the doorway of a supermarket, although this has not been directly linked to others. The following three, on 16, 18 and 27 April all involved the use of a blunt instrument.
