While the coronavirus figures for Spain continue to rise, for the first time the country has been able to report a fall in the daily increase of both deaths and new Covid-19 infections.

Monday's official figures counted 812 new deaths, 26 fewer than Sunday's 838, taking the total up to 7,340.

Meanwhile the official number of infections in Spain has reached 85,195, overtaking the 82,447 cases reported by the Chinese authorities. This latest figure, however, shows an increase of 6,398 cases in one day, down on the 6,549 reported by the government on Sunday.

The number of health workers infected with Covid-19 is rising however, with 12,298 cases, 15% of the country's total.

Bearing in mind the current figures, the government's Health ministry said on Monday that the spread of the virus is started to be "under control". It went so far as to say that the country could have already reached a peak in infections on 25 March.

Also in the last 24-period analysed, 2,071 more patients have been declared as having recovered from the disease, taking the total up to 16,780.
