Government closes Valle de los Caídos ahead of Franco's exhumation

The transfer of the former dictator's remains to the Mingorrubio cemetery in Madrid is set to take place before 25 October

Francisco Franco will be exhumed from his resting place in the Valle de los Caídos before 25 October and his remains later transferred to the Mingorrubio cemetery in El Pardo (Madrid), it has been announced.

The operation is expected to take place between Friday 18 and Tuesday 22, according to government sources, following a long legal battle with the former dictator's grandchildren.

From tomorrow, Saturday, the complex belonging to National Heritage will be closed to the public for security reasons.

Acting vice president Carmen Calvo has said that the family of the dictator will be informed of the date 48 hours beforehand should they wish to be present.
