The streets of Barcelona, the Catalan capital, and other towns and villages in the region were filled with festivities and political statements on Wednesday.
People were marking the Diada (or Catalunya Day) public holiday, held every 11 September.
The date marks the surrender of Barcelona in 1714 to French troops at the end of the War Of The Spanish Succession.
As well as cultural events, there was a large demonstration by supporters of independence and marchers congregated around the Plaza de España.
