Spain is one of six European countries that has said it will take some migrants from the rescue ship of Spanish-run charity, Open Arms.

Those on board continued to wonder on Thursday afternoon when they could dock at the Italian port of Lampedusa. Despite resistance to docking from the Italian government for the last two weeks, on Wednesday a court in Italy said on humanitarian grounds the vessel had to be allowed in. But coastguards did not immediately let them reach land on Thursday.

Some of the 147 on board had started silent protests as conditions deteriorated this week, and a high-profile visit from actor Richard Gere appeared to have had little effect on politicians.

Oscar Camps, head of the charity, said on Wednesday, "There are arguments over a piece of shade, food or the bathroom. There's very high emotional shock."
