Patricia Ortega has been appointed the first woman general at a ceremony in Madrid.

The 56-year-old was among the first intake of women into the army in 1988 after graduating as an agronomist.

She is now director of the national institute of aerospace technique, INTA, part of the armed forces.

Head of the army, Francisco Javier Varela, said at the traditional ceremony that "Patricia Ortega becoming a general is based on merit and ability and is not down to any quota".
