The girlfriend of a 20-year-old British man who died in a fall from a second floor balcony in Magaluf, Mallorca, on 7 June denied in a tweet sent on Thursday that his death was due to "balconying". In the message, Mia Smith blamed the death of Freddie Pring on the low height of balcony railings in Spain.

Balconying is the practice of jumping either between balconies or from balconies into pools that has caused the death of several foreign tourists in recent years.

The message, published by Mia Smith was titled, "Retweet to save a life", and said that "Freddie wasn't the first and likely won't be the last to die from a balcony fall abroad." It continues that "in Spain the legal minimum height for balconies is 3ft 7in [1.09 metres], approx waist height for most and a height waiting for accidents."

She says that Freddie walked out onto the balcony after a night out and fell. The message criticises holiday accommodation owners for not doing more. "They know their guests will be getting drunk so they need to make sure there are extra safety precautions to keep their guests safe."

The tweet has received replies both of support and criticism. Some people commenting said that the problem lies in the excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs and not with the balconies, while others agreed with the message.
